Master of Science in Environmental Sciences
PREPARATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. The graduate program in environmental studies is designed primarily for students with a background in science or engineering. Students with exceptional academic records but educated in business, liberal arts, education, humanities, etc., with a recognized science minor will be considered but may be required to complete additional preparatory work before admission to the graduate program.
2. Preparation consists of 12 hours of basic sciences (including at least 3 hours of 2000 level or above in Biology and/or Life Sciences and 3 hours of chemistry) and 3 hours of introductory statistics (EXST 2201 or equivalent).
should CORE Curriculum
The cor Core curriculum in Environmental Sciences includes thirteen hours of core courses that all ENVS students are required to take. Additional coursework will depend on the focus of each student’s research interests.
At least half of every student’s coursework must come from ENVS graduate courses for the student to receive a M.S. in environmental sciences.
All students under the core curriculum are required to take the following 4 credits:
- ENVS 7950 Special Topics in Environmental Sciences(Integrated
Environmental Issues(team taught) (3)
- ENVS 7995 Environmental Sciences Seminar (1)
In addition, students must choose 3 more courses, one course from each of the three areas of interest in the department. Students are encouraged to take all 6 courses.
The areas of interest include the following:
I. Environmental Toxicology (3)
- ENVS 4101 Environmental Chemistry
- ENVS 4477 Environmental Toxicology: Introduction and Applications
II. Wetland Science and Management (3)
- ENVS 7110 Toxicology of Aquatic Environments
- OCS 4465 Coastal Zone Management
III. Environmental Planning and Management (3)
- ENVS 7040 Environmental Planning and Management
- ENVS 7043 Environmental Law and Regulations
In addition to the 13 credits for the core curriculum, students must choose either the thesis option or non-thesis option.
Thesis Option
Under this program, students must take 6 hours of ENVS 8000, Thesis Research.
Elective Requirements under the thesis option program
Students wishing to pursue the thesis option will be required to take a minimum of 17 hours of elective credit. These electives should be selected by the student and approved by the committee/advisor prior to registration for the third semester in residence. At least half of the 36 hour requirement must be taken from courses at or above the 7000-level.
